Swinford v Charlestown Under 21B Championship

Some pictures tell a story but there was a lot to our destruction of our neighbours Charlestown this afternoon at a wet and windy Robert McCallion Memorial Park.

It was a game that we led from the first score but with a very strong wind in the first half and only leading by 1 at the break a lot was expected from Charlestown in the second half but mighty work from the entire team held the ‘town scoreless and we ran out easy winners by 8 and what could have been a lot more.

For the diehards in the club any win over Charlestown is worth celebrating but such a superb win in a semi final will be doubling celebrated tonight. Nothing won yet and we look forward to a final next weekend against either Hollymount/Carramore or Davitts.

The game started in windy but dry conditions and the pitch was looking well after all the early rain. Liam Moran got us off the mark with an early free and we soon gained a strong foothold in the game. Kevin McDonagh added the second after the ball was well won by Ryan Convey. A great goal chance fell to James Devaney but the crossbar stood in his way.

After some fine work by Johnny Burke and Liam Moran Kevin McDonagh added his second and our third point.

There was twelve minutes on the clock before Charlestown got off the mark, after two earlier wides. James Devaney had a long kick pushed over the bar by the Charlestown goalkeeper to keep the lead at 3. The visitors added their second before Liam Moran added another free and Mark Forkan got our sixth point.

With two minutes left in the half Charlestown scored a goal and what turned out to be their last score. Before the break they added three wides to their wide tally to lead us leading by the minimum of 0-6 to 1-2.

Swinford supporters were very nervous at the break with only a point lead and now with the wind to play against. However the rain came down and the wind died down for the second half. After an early wide for Charlestown James Devaney got the goal which put daylight between the two teams and Kevin McDonagh covering every blade of grass on the field added two more points to put us firmly in the driving seat. Our visitors continued extending their wide total.

Johnny Burke made a great run up the field and a good ball into Michael Walsh who kicked it over the bar to put 7 between us midway through the half. Sean Prendergast who was having an excellent game picked up an injury and was replaced by Conor Conway.

Two great goal chances then fell our way when first Michael Walsh and then Liam Moran had shots screaming across the box. Charlestown then had a great chance to get back into the game but for a fine save by Jonathan Giblin.

With chances to extend our lead we had a few bad wides and one off the upright before Liam Moran got the last score of the game to leave it 1-10 to 1-2 at the final whistle.

A great team effort by all concerned in tough conditions saw  us progress to the M D Roofing services Under 21 B Championship final.

  • Under 21 Swinford v Belmullet

    Under 21 Swinford v Belmullet

On a cold cold afternoon at the Connacht Centre of Excellence in Bekan Swinford dispensed with Belmullet in the quarter final of the MD Roofing Services Under 21 B Championship. We march into the semi-final against neighbours Charlestown.

It was a game that we controlled from start to finish and finished with eight different scorers and 21 points on the scoreboard.

From the throw in we attacked the Belmullet defence and James Devaney soon had us off and running. This first score was soon followed by points from Kevin McDonagh, Johnny Burke, Mark Forkan and a free from Liam Moran. Belmullet could not get a look in and our dominance continued with more points from Johnny Burke and two more from Liam Moran and one from Michael Walsh.

With twenty minutes gone with us leading by 9 points Belmullet got their first score and this was soon followed by another point and a goal to bring them back to within 4 points. With no wish to let Belmullet back into the game Kevin McDonagh added a free and Liam Moran with  fourth point. Belmullet added two more points split by a point from James Devaney to leave the half time score at Swinford 0-12 Belmullet 1-4.

From the start of the second half there was no relaxing and Liam Moran went on a great run, leaving four defenders in his trail and scored a great point. This was quickly followed by a point from Johnny Burke, Kevin McDonagh, Mark Forkan and James Lavin to give us a ten point lead after ten minutes.

Jonathan Giblin was called into action and made a very good save and from their next attack Belmullet sent a long range shot off the upright and wide. You are never going to dominate a game for the entire sixty minutes and Belmullet scored the next three points but this was as close as they got in the second half. Another point from Mark Forkan and a free from Liam Moran eased the pressure. Both teams swapped a couple of points with scores from Ryan Convey and the final score coming from Kevin McDonagh to finish at Swinford 0-21 Belmullet 1-9.

It was a dominant performance from Swinford and we will now play Charlestown in the semi final.

Swinford: Jonathan Giblin, Alan McLoughlin, Steven McNicholas, Sean Prendergast, Sean Brady, James Lavin, Michael Walsh, Mark Forkan, James Devaney, Liam Moran, Kevin McDonagh, Ryan Convey, Johnny Burke. Sub: Conor Conway

  • M D Roofing Under 21 B Championship Swinford v Erris St.Pats

    M D Roofing Under 21 B Championship Swinford v Erris St.Pats

We enjoyed a good win in the Championship at home on Saturday evening, beating Erris St. Pats by 2-15 to 2-9. The scoreline does not reflect the win as we were much better that the six point margin. We are now into the quarter finals in the next few weeks.

In an action packed first few minutes both goalkeepers were called into early action after an early point from Kevin McDonagh. Johnny Burke nealy got an early goal after a great run but his shot was well saved. Jonathan Giblin then pulled off a god save in the visitors first attack.

Ryan Convey soon added a second point and this was followed by one from Johnny Burke after a fine run in from the right sideline to punch the ball over the crossbar. Kevin McDonagh added his second of the game before Ryan Convey got the first goal. Johnny Burke got another point to leave the game at 1-5 to no score.

Erris St.Pats got their first score from a free before getting a goal from the penalty spot after Alan McLoughlin was left with no alternative but to pull the attacker down. It was a close call as the offence looked to have taken place outside the penalty area. McLoughlin was black carded and replaced by Conor Conway.

This setback didn’t perturb us and we soon added points bySean Brady, James Devaney and a goal from Mark Forkan. The visitors added two points from the dead ball before Sean Brady added his second point before the half time break.

A very good first half with six different scorers left us leading by 2-8 to 1-3.

We started the second half superbly with Mick Walsh winning the throw in and feeding the ball to Liam Moran who slotted it over the bar.  Erris St.Pats then scored their first from open play to put them on 1-4.

We soon opened up an eleven point lead with points from Ryan Convey, Kevin McDonagh a fine effort from James Devaney to put us on 2-12. Our opponents got the next two points before we restored the eleven point lead with a point from Johnny Burke and a well taken score from Ryan Convey kicked whilst off balance. At this stage with about ten minutes left we were coasting but we relaxed and let our opponents back into the game.

Another soft penalty and a point brought Erris St.Pats to within seven before Kevin McDonagh got his fourth of the game. The game finished with two points for the visitors on a scoreline of Swinford 2-15 Erris St.Pats 2-9.

Well done to all the players and their management team of Pat O’Neill, Michael Devaney, Noel Barry and Eamon Molloy.
