Under 10 Blitz

2015-09-12 14.32.08

Knockmore invited a team of our u10s to play in their annual blitz last Saturday. This competition involves 24 clubs from around the county and is a credit to Knockmore GAA.

The Swinford team played very well and ended up winning their section.Β  They are just one team from our panel of 35 u10s and the entire u10 panel has shown great application and attitude this year. They improve with every game and we can look forward to seeing them wearing the Black & Red for the next few decades!

A special word of thanks must go out to the coaches on the day – James McNicholas, Ray Gilmore, Thomas Tuffy & Michael Devaney – and to all the underage coaches that are doing such great work for the future of the club, from u6 upwards.

Senior League Div 1C Swinford v Lahardane

023

A very impressive performance by Swinford against a very game Lahardane team that were just blown away in the second half.

Lahardane got off to a good start and through good ball movement in the first minute just shot wide with a good goal opportunity and then followed up with a point chance that was well caught by Ryan Convey.

After four minutes James Devaney had a chance for goal saved and put out for a 45 which was nailed over by Liam Moran, Lahardane had a chance to equalise but put the ball wide before we doubled our lead with a good point by Danny McNicholas.

Lahardane created another goal chance that was well saved by Ryan Convey but nothing he could do about the second shot which rattled the back of the net and Lahardane led for the only time in the game by 1.

A wide followed for Swinford before a great ball from Danny McNicholas found Eoin Gallagher who sent the ball over the bar to level the game. A few more wides followed for Swinford before another great save by Ryan Convey and unlike the goal the second shot was cleared off the line by Fergal Harte.

James Devaney got his first score of the game from the dead ball and this was followed by Jack McDonnell with a point from approx 45 yards out. Larhardane got a point back before points from James Devaney, Jack McDonnell, Joe Kelly and Liam Moran put Swinford firmly in control. Just before the break Lahardane scored a point to leave only four between the teams at Swinford 0-9 Lahardane 1-2.

Swinford had a number of wides in the first half while Lahardane could have got more on the board is they had taken points instead of going for goals.

The second half started at a great pace and from winning the throw in Swinford had the ball to Darren Campbel who nailed it over the bar. This was followed by a pointed free from Liam Moran and a point from play by James Devaney who soon won a penalty after been pulled down in the square. This was dispatched to the back of the net by Jack McDonnell and Swinford were now leading by 10 with only minutes gone in the half.

More points followed by the Green headed Mick Walsh, James Devaney and Liam Moran (F) and Fergal Harte. In what was their first attack of the half Larhardane went for goal by Ryan Convey pulled off another save and the ball was forced wide.

Swinford had a goal chance of their own that was just missed by substitute Kevin McShea after a great cross from James Devaney. From the resulting kick out Mick Walsh won the ball, played to James Devaney who switced the ball across field to Darren Campbell who easily put the ball over the bar.Β  James Devaney then got another point after punching the ball over the bar and we led by 16.

It was 22 minutes into the half before Lahardane raised a flag and it was a green one but straight down the other end substitute James Sweeney punched the ball over the bar. The resulting kickout was won by Mick Walsh who played the ball to Eoin Gallagher who got his second point of the game. A poor kickout from Lahardane had the ball in James Devaney’s hands and with the goal at his mercy he does not miss and Swinford had 2-20 on the scoreboard.

Lahardane got another point before some nice work by Kevin McDonagh and subs Anthony Friel and Kevin McShea ended up with a third goal for Swinford by McShea. The game ended up with a final point by Liam Moranto finish Swinford 3-21 Lahardane 2-3.

Bonniconlon v Swinford 11th July 2015

We maintained our good start to the league campaign with a hard fought win away to Bonniconlon on what was a cold July evening. Unfortunately the game was marred by a nasty injury to Barry Brennan mid way through the second half.Β  We wish Barry a speedy recovery.

Bonniconlon got the first score of the game after two minutes with a soft free. After that both teams missed a load of chances and the next score didn’t come until the 17th minute when a scramble in the Bonniconlon goalmouth led to a goal by Barry Brennan. Another free led to Bonniconlon second score when our defence overcarried the ball.

Jack McDonnell then led the way with three points though the last one did look as if it had gone to the left of the post and wide. Thankfully it is the referee view that counts and he gave the point. Bonniconlon then score two points to leave the game at half time 0-4 to 1-3.

In the opening 8 minutes of the second half we took control of the game with a point from Liam Moran and three more from Jack McDonnell. The highlight been a free from the sideline out on the left by Jack. The game then swung the way of the home team and they rattled off 5 points to leave just a point between the teams midway through the half.

At this stage Barry Brennan picked up his injury and the game was held up for a few minutes as he was stretchered off the pitch. Our physio Brian Galvin was on hand to skilfully deal with the situation. Kevin McShea came on for Barry.

The team rallied and through Jack McDonnell and James Devaney we went three points ahead. Yet again Bonniconlon came back at us and scored the next three points to level the game as we entered injury time.

We then showed strong resolve and to fine scores by Jack McDonnell and Kevin McShea saw us take the two points and a final score of Bonniconlon 0-12 Swinford 1-11.

Never an easy place to go through Bonniconlon are much better then their current league position shows we showed will power to win the game and maintain our second place in the divison. Next up in another road trip to Louisburgh on the 26th July.

Swinford: Ryan Convey, Jason Carney, Paul McDonagh, Paul McNicholas, Liam Moran, Mark Forkan, Kevin Doyle, Eoin Gallagher, Joe Kelly, Tom Horkan, John Carney, James Sweeney, James Devaney, Barry Brennan, Jack McDonnell. Subs: Johnny Burke, Kevin McShea.

Scorers: Jack McDonnell 0-8, Barry Brennan 1-0, James Devaney, Liam Moran, Kevin McShea 0-1 each.
