Junior Championship Killala v Swinford

A game that started so well finished with a whimper from Swinford. Playing with a strong wind we scored a free and a goal within the first 8minutes to lead by 4. Darren Campbell scored the first point of the game and Ryan Convey finished off a good move with a well taken goal.

Killala got one point back before Kevin McDonagh scored a free to keep the lead at 4. Unfortutantely Killala scored 4 of the next 5 scores to leave Swinford leading by 1 at Half Time. The Swinford score coming from another free by Kevin McDonagh. The pick oft the Killala scores coming from a 45 by the very reliable Andrew Farrell just in the  half time whistle.

Needing a good start to the second half the opposite happened and Swinford were 3 behind after two minutes and things got worse as Killala scored 2-3 without Swinford troubling the umpires. Only for a great double save by Sean Kavanagh things could have been a lot worse. Pearse Walsh got our first score of the half after about 15 minutes but the onslaught from Killala keptcoming and after 20 minutes the score was Killala 3-10 Swinford 1-4.

Kevin McDonagh added a consolation free for Swinford before Killala finished the game with another 2 points. Save for poor shooting by Killala and great defence from Jason Carney the difference could have been a lot worse.

With Louisburgh and Kilfian drawing in the other game we must now defeat Kilfian inour last group game to avoid relegation.

50-50-draw

50/50 Draw
This weeks draw for Swinford GAA 50/50 draw was held in Gateway Hotel on 9th June and Tommy Dyna Feeney won €711. Envelopes are available in most business premises and online through www.swinfordgaa.ie where tickets can be purchased in bundles of 10/25/52 weeks. Draw Envelopes are also available in all business premises for the next draw in Moores on 16th June. Draw envelopes are now also available at 3 for €5.

Division 1C Swinford v The Neale
We got our season back on track with a win at home to The Neale by 2-13 to 1-11. Goals in either half by Barry Brenann and Jack McDonnell and some fine points from Stephen Henry saw us take the 2 league points. Scorers: Jack McDonnell 1-3, Barry Brennan 1-1, Kevin McShea 0-4, Stephen Henry 0-3, Liam Moran, Tom Horkan 0-1 each. Full report on our website.

Junior Championship Louisburgh v Swinford
We made the trip to Louisburgh on Saturday evening for round 1 of the junior championship and the gulf between the teams showed as the home team won by 2-11 to 0-8. A young team put in a good display against one of the favourites for the junior championship. Scorers: McDonagh 0-4, Paddy Ward, Darren Campbell, Sean Brady, Gerry Callaghan 0-1 each. Senior League Div 1C Swinford v The Neale

Both teams entered todays game sitting on 2 wins and would not have wanted to give an advantage on the league table to the other side but it is Swinford who now sit on 6 points after 4 games after a hard fought game.

Straight from the throw in Kevin McShea put Swinford a point ahead and this was soon added to by a good run and score from Liam Moran in from the left.

The Neale pulled a point back before a point and a goal from Barry Brennan put Swinford firmly in control. This was soon added to by a free from Kevin McShea and it looked like Swinford would stroll away with the game as they led by 1-4 to 0-1 with nearly 15 minutes gone.

The Neale then struck two frees over the bar to reduce the deficit. In between these scores Ryan Convey made a great save in the Swinford goals.

Swinford struck back with a score from Stephen Henry before The Neale scored the next three points, with two very soft frees given by the referee, to leave the gap at 2 points.

Swinford then retook control of the games and two points from Jack McDonnell and a point from Kevin McShea restored a 5 point lead. Just before the break Stephen Henry had a great opportunity for a goal but the ball came off the post. Half time saw Swinford lead 1-8 to 0-6.

A mixed start to the second half saw Stephen Henry extend the Swinford lead with a well taken point before Joe Kelly was adjudged by the referee to have pulled an opponent down and was shown the black card. James Sweeney came on as the replacement.

The Neale pulled a point back before two frees, one from Jack McDonnell and the other from Kevin McShea saw Swinford lead by 7 with approximately 15 minutes gone.

The Neale then began to dominate the game and scored a free before been reduced to 14 men but they then struck the next 1-3, including three frees to level the game as we entered the last eight minutes.

The extra man then began to show and Tom Horkan put Swinford a point ahead before a goal from Jack McDonnell. A high ball into the small area seemed to be under easy control of the Neale goalkeeper but under pressure from James Sweeney he dropped the ball and Jack McDonnell finished off into an empty net.

Stephen Henry finished off a fine game with his third point from play to end the game Swinford 2-13 The Neale 1-11.

Swinford now go joint second in the table with  Castlebar Mitchels, both behind Islandeady with a third of the season gone.

Junior Championship Report Louisburgh v Swinford

The Junior Championship started this evening at a blustery Louisburgh GAA ground but it was the home team that blew Swinford away with a goal in each half.

The named teams saw one change for each side with Jason Carney starting for Stephen McDonnell and James Gibbons replacing Eugene O’Toole on the Louisburgh team.

Once the ball was thrown in Austin O’Malley dropped back to play in front of his defence in a sweeper type role. The home team started off playing into the wind with two wides before Kevin McDonagh got us off the mark with a pointed free.

Kevin Gibbons then scored two points for Louisburgh before he pulled a shot wide when straigh through on goals. Louisburgh extended their lead with a 21 yard free.

We then took a hold of the game and scored the next three points from Paddy Ward, Darren Campbell (f) and Sean Brady. The pick of the three been Paddy Ward’s point as he was fed by a great ball by Kevin McDonagh.

Unfortunately that ended our scoring for the half as Louisbugh scored 1-3 without reply with the goal from corner forward Pearse O’Malley giving Sean Kavanagh no chance.

Half time came as a relief to us with the score at Louisburgh 1-6 Swinford 0-4.

Management made two changes at the break with Stephen McDonnell and Caoimhin McLoughlin came on for Johnnie Pidgeon and Paddy Ward.

A great move from one end of the pitch to the other produced a fine point for Gerry Callaghan but then two poor decisons from the referee gave Louisburgh two soft frees to extend their lead to six points.

We had a chance to change the game when a fine shot from Kevin McDonagh was cleared from the goal line by the Louisburgh defence with their goalkeeper beaten.  A few minutes later Pearse Walsh was fouled on the 21 yard line when advantage could have been played the referee gave the free which was dispatched by Kevin McDonagh.

Moments later the game was got from us when Gerry Callaghan was sent off by referee Sean Conway which was soon followed by a shot into the bottom corner by Kevin Gibbons to make up for his miss in the first half.

Kevin McDonagh who never gave up, won a free and knocked it over the bar to keep our score ticking over. This was soon canceled out by a free from Kevin Gibbons before Kevin McDonagh repeated his score from minutes earlier.

The game creeped into injury time which saw Louisburgh finish off the scoring with two further points to end the game Louisburgh 2-11 Swinford 0-8.

Louisburgh were the stronger team with good performances from Austin O’Malley and Kevin Gibbons while a young Swinford team saw good performances from Jason Carney, Kevin McDonagh, Ryan Convey and Darren Campbell to name a few.

It is now on to another away trip to Killala next Saturday evening who enjoyed a one point victory away to Kilfian this evening.

Junior Championship Round 1 Louisburgh v Swinford

Saturday 6th June brings the start of the 2015 Junior Championship. After winning the 2014 Junior B Championship we have now progressed to the A competition and we are drawn in a very tough group.

Our travels begin with a visit to Louisbugh at 6-30pm Saturday to be followed by a trip to Killala on Saturday 13th June.  Our final group game is a home fixture against Kilfian, which is fixed for Saturday 4th July.

With a number of players having played for the Intermediate team a few weeks ago there is plenty of openings for someone to come in and make a name for themselves.

Hopefully the weather picks up and we will have a grand evening in West Mayo. If possible come along and support the team.
