Egan Jewellers Intermediate Championship Round 1

It was a lovely May afternoon at Robert McCallion Memorial Park but unfortunately the weather was all that was nice about the day as a strong Burrishoole team left with the two points in Group 3 of the Intermediate Championship.Β  We entered the game missing some key players and with championship starting debuts to a number of players.

Burrishoole started the better team and led by 3 points by the 7th minutes. Eleven minutes had elapsed before Johnny Burke got us on the scoreboard. We then lost Kevin McShea and Paul McDonagh to injury before Johnny Burke narrowed the Burrishoole lead with his second point. Unfortunately Burrishoole scored the next four points before Jacl McDonnell goy our third point to leave the game at half time Swinford 0-3 Burrishoole 0-7.

A fisted point by James Devaney got us off the mark in the second half but then followed two quick points from the visitors to put them five ahead. James Devaney then scored a very good overhead point which was followed by a goal and point by Jack McDonnell. The goal came from a very good move by james Devaney who was settling well into his championship debut. The teams were now level. This period of Swinford dominance saw the welcome introduction of John Carney to the play for his first football of the year after a nasty training injury.

Instead of Swinford pushing on Burrishoole took a hold of the game and scored the next four points and with 25 minutes on the clock Burrishoole led by 4 again. Liam Moran got a score back from a place ball but then Joe Kelly picked up his second yellow and Burrishoole finished the game with three unanswered points to win by six.

Next up in the championship is a home game against Tourmakeady who were well beaten on Saturday evening by Hollymount/Carramore.

Swinford scorers: Jack McDonnell 1-2, Johnny Burke & James DevaneyΒ  0-2, Liam Moran 0-1.

Swinford Conor Campbell, Fergal Harte, Paul McDonagh, Mark Forkan, Liam Moran,Β  Dermot Keane, Kevin Doyle, Eoin Gallagher, Joe Kelly, Stephen Henry, Kevin McShea, Johnny Burke, Jack McDonnell, Michael Walsh, James Devaney. Subs used: Tom Horkan, James Sweeney, John Carney, Barry Brennan.
