    Swinford v Cill Chomain

    Ch3c0vwWUAEq-sD Ch3c3OHW0AAIW2o

On a wet and windy Saturday evening at Robert McCallion Memorial Park we played our third league game with hopes of maintaining our 100% start to the season, especially going into the first round of the Intermediate Championship next week.

Unfortunately on a very poor performance we are left to ponder the many errors and mistakes and how to get it all right in eight days.

In a first half that we completely dominated but only went in at the break with a three point lead, 0-4 to 0-1. We used the ball very well and our defence was on top but our scoring boots were somewhere else. We put four wides on the statistic board before Cill Chomain opened the scoring after 8 minutes. It took another five minutes for Jack McDonnell to get our opening score but this was followed by a few more wides.

After 24 minutes it was only a point apiece before John Carney kicked a lovely point from about 40 out. This was soon followed by a fisted point from Mark Forkan after the ball came back off the upright from a James Devaney shot. Liam Moran quickly scored our fourth point and we led by three but before the break we had nother two wides.

At this stage we were well on top, though having played with the wind, but not reflected on the scoreboard.

The second half was a different story and nothing went to plan, far  too many misplaced passes and taking far too long to make decisions and move the ball up the field. Yet we were still in the game as Cill Chomain decided to leave their scoring boots in the dressing room. The visitors kicked two wides at the start of the half before getting the first score atfer 6 minutes. They then decided to kick a further four wides before they leveled the game after 14 minutes.

At this stage we could not even get the ball out of our own half and we completely under the cosh. Cill Chomain took the lead before we quickly equalised through a point from Mark Forkan. We again swapped points with Cill Chomain taking the lead before Mark Forkan popped up again to level.

So with ten minutes left we were both on six points but then the visitors found their scoring boots and kicked over three unanswered points to win by 0-6 to 0-9.

A lot has to be done before next weekends Championship fixture. There would appear to be a lack of belief in the team as we struggled to move the ball to our forwards and keep our structure on the field. There is no doubt the players have the ability to strike back and there will be no better place to do it next weekend.

Swinford: Sean Kavanagh, Steven McNicholas, Fergal Harte, Alan McLoughlin, Jason Carney, Sean Brady, James Lavin, Eoin Gallagher, Mark Forkan, Johnny Burke, Liam Moran, John Carney, James Devaney, Jack McDonnell, Kevin McDonagh. Subs Ryan Convey, Darragh McIntyre, John Gerard Kelly

Scorers: Mark Forkan 0-3, Jack McDonnell, John Carney, Liam Moran 0-1 each

  • Senior League Div1E Swinford v Kilmovee

Senior League Div1E Swinford v Kilmovee

On a fine evening for football we lost to Kilmovee Shamrocks by the minimum on a score of Swinford 2-6 Kilmovee 1-10.

We got off to a great start with a goal by Darragh McIntyre with our first attack, a long ball that deceived the Kilmovee goalkeeper and went over his head into the goal. Frees were then swapped by both teams with Darren Campbell knocking our one over. The visitors then kicked three points without reply to level the game. Darren Campbell put us back in front with a free after Fergal Loftus was hauled to the ground just outside the penalty box.

Disaster struct when a a 45 from Kilmovee dropped short and with a shot from 15 yards out was struck through a body of players into the goal.

We didn’t let that affect us and our next attack saw a well taken goal by Cillian O’Donnellto put us back in front. Kilmovee soon leveled and both teams swapped wides before the half time break.

The second half was very slow to get going but we again retook the lead with a point from Mark McNicholas which was followed by a point from Darragh McIntyre. It took until the 18th minute from Kilmovee to register a score inthe second half but they soon had another to keep the teams level.

Again both teams swapped frees and with five minutes we weve level for the 4th time. Two more frees for Kilmovee had them 2 up and the match into injury time. Kevin McDonagh entered the match and the Kilmovee goalkeeper made up for his earlier mistake to pull off a great save. We had another attack with ended with a 21 yard free which was shot just over the bar and the game finished with a disappointing one point defeat.

    Michael Walsh Intermediate League

    Swinford 0-8 Balla 0-6

Swinford managed to fend off a late Balla resurgence on Sunday as they advanced to the Michael Walsh semi-final where they will play Moy Davitts in Parke on Saturday.
It was the visitors to Robert McCallion Memorial Park who started the brighter and opened the scoring with a couple of points before Gerry Callaghan got his side up and running with a fine score from a tight angle. From that point on, there was very little Balla resistance in terms of scoring until late in the game as they wasted numerous opportunities in front of goal whilst Swinford took their chances much better.
Danny McNicholas hit a long range score which was followed by scores from midfielder Mark Forkan, a John Carney free and James Sweeney to push Swinford into a 0-5 to 0-2 lead. Manager Pat O’Neil decided to change things up minutes later bringing on four substitutes – Ryan Convey, Kevin McDonagh, Joe Kelly and Mick Prendergast – 10 minutes before half time.
The subs had an immediate impact with Kevin McDonagh tapping over a point moments after a move between himself and Mick Prendergast almost reaped a score.
At half time Swinford were four points ahead and seemingly in control of the game as they gradually began to assert themselves in the middle of the park. Kevin McDonagh hit over another free before Mick Prendergast hit a long range effort 10 minutes into the half. That would be Swinford’s last score however as Balla began to get on top in the possession stakes. However they couldn’t close the gap completely with three points from frees and another from play their only return from the second half as the defensive effort led by Steven McNicholas, sweeper John Carney and Alan McLoughlin stopped many of their attacks in their tracks.

Swinford: Sean Kavanagh, Kevin Barry, Steven McNicholas, Alan McLoughlin, Darren Campbell, Sean Brady, James Lavin, Mark Forkan, Barry Brennan, John Carney, Danny McNicholas, Liam Moran, James Sweeney, Gerry Callaghan, James Devanney.
Scorers: Kevin McDonagh 0-2, Mark Forkan, Danny McNicholas, Mark Forkan, Mick Prendergast, Gerry Callaghan and James Sweeney 0-1 each.

Thanks to Kevin Moran for the report.

  • MD Roof Under 21 B Final Swinford v Davitts

MD Roof Under 21 B Final Swinford v Davitts

    CWmoTNhWwAAjOEt

History was made on Saturday evening at Elverys McHale Park as we won our first Under 21 Championship. We suffered defeats in our two previous finals in 1993 and 1998 but this time we were by far the better team.

It took a little time for us to get our rhythm going in the game. Daviits playing with the win into the bacon factory end got off to the better start and after five minutes were two points up.

It took us until the 7th minute to raise our first white flag with a nice point from Kevin McDonagh and were quickly level with a point from James Devaney. There then followed a great goal chance from James Devaney 10547674_1082761288442234_9083415397334733737_n

A nice move ended with a cheeky chip of the Davitts goalkeeper but the ball just trailed wide of the post.

Davitts retook the lead from a free but the game was soon level for the second time when a high ball into the square was punched over the bar by Ryan Convey. On the 15th minute we took the lead from a well taken point by Kevin McDonagh which was set up by Johnny Burke winning the Davitts kickout. We were then in complete control and two points from James Devaney had us leading by double scores after 20 minutes. Unfortunately the game then swung the way of Davitts and they rattled over two points. It could have been worse for us but for a great save by Jonathan Giblin.

Liam Moran then got his first score of the game from a free before davitts finished the half the stronger and scored two points to leave it level on 7 points a piece at the break.

We got off to a great start in the second half with a great point from Sean Brady from over 40 yards. Some great work by Sean Prendergast in front of the stand led to a second scored free from Liam Moran.

Davitts then got a soft free to bring the game back to one point but that was as close as they were to get as for the next 15 minutes we dominated the game. Liam Moran showed why he was a worthy man of the match scoring 1-3 including two frees and a great goal. James Lavin received the ball inside our own half and played it down the sideline to James Devaney who did very well to stay in play, he drew in the defenders and played the ball to a charging Liam Moran who sweetly put in in the back of the net.

    12366051_1082761701775526_5441741777229188554_o

Just before the goal we lost Sean Prendergast to injury and he was replaced by Conor Conway.

Davitts never gave up and scored two points but Liam Moran wasn’t finished and got a lovely point from well out the field.

Michael Prendergast replaced the hard working Michael Walsh with five minutes left.

Liam Moran scored his final point with a free from 45 yards out to finish the game with 1-7. In between Davitts got some consolation scores before Kevin McDonagh finshed the game with a point from the left sideline.

Into the last stages of the game Johnnie Pidgeon replaced James Devaney.

Charlie Collins brought the game to a end to finish 1-15 to 0-12 and our first Under 21 title.

The MD Roof Services trophy was presented to our joint captains Mark Forkan and Stephen McNicholas.

Full credit goes to the entire squad and the team management of Pat O’Neill, Michael Devaney, Noel Barry and Eamon Molloy and team physio Brian Galvin.

Along the way we beat Erris St. Patricks, Belmullet and a great win over our neighbours Charlestown in the semi final. Playing football in December is not ideal but it worked perfectly for us to give a great end to the year for the club.

Thanks to Swinford Killasser Ladies club for the use of their jerseys. Their great year certainly rubbed off on us. Thanks also to Philip Durkin for the pictures.
