Senior League Div1C Parke KC v Swinford match report

Immense display by Swinford in the second half, showing that there is plenty of football and self belief in the team, but all came up short when Parke scored the winning point 2 minutes into injury time.

At half time the game looked like it was game over with no way back for Swinford as Parke KC led 1-10 to 0-3. Swinford scores coming from two for Liam Moran and one for Tom Horkan.

Within a minute of the restart Swinford had a penalty. It was well saved by the Parke goalkeeper but thankfully came back to Liam Moran who made no mistake with the rebound. Parke came back with a point but points from Tom Horkan and Liam Moran gave Swinford a lifeline.

A great save by Damien Geraghty and some poor finishing by Parke gave us a boost and substitute Darren Campbell got our second goal, followed up by a Johnny Burke point to put only 2 between the teams after ten minutes of the second half.

Tom Horkan brought the game back to the bare minimum before Parke scored their second of the half. Both teams had a couple of wides before two frees were put over by Liam Moran to level the game with three minutes left on the clock. There was to be a few minutes of inury time due to an injury to Kevin McDonagh.

At this stage a point was deserved by Swinford for the second half performance but on the 62nd minute Parke KC got what this writer can only say was a very soft free to go ahead. We had a half chance to level the game but time was to run out and the game ended Parke KC 1-13 Swinford 2-9.

With wins for Achill, Ardagh and Castlebar Mitchels things are now very tight at the bottom of Division 1C but if Swinford can play for 60+ minutes like the second half today the tide will turn.

Swinford: Damien Geraghty, Alan McLoughlin, Sean Brady, Kevin Barry, Joshua Smith, Ryan Convey, James Lavin, Johnny Burke, Michael Walsh, Tom Horkan, James Sweeney, Liam Moran, Kevin McDonagh, Dermot McNicholas, Michael Prendergast. Subs Darren Campbell, Conor Conway, Louis Cummins.

Scorers: Liam Moran 1-5, Darren Campbell 1-0, Tom Horkan 0-3, Johnny Burke 0-1.

Senior League Match Report Swinford v Achill

    Swinford_GAA_Crest

After the disappointment of last weekend the team put in a very good display this evening at Robert McCallion Memorial Park to draw with Achill.

A great bunch travelled from the island to Swinford for the game and it was well worth the journey. Both teams played football that does not warrant their positions near the bottom of division 1C.

Michael Walsh opened the scoring after 20 seconds where fine interplay between Kevin McDonagh, James Sweeney set Mick up for the point. Achill kicked the next three points over the space of five minutes, the first one coming from a good save by Damien Geraghty.

Swinford second was a lovely point from Kevin McDonagh, a one-two from a sideline ball with Mick Walsh set Kevin away to kick over the bar. Achill soon restored their two point lead.

In the 8th minute Kevin McDonagh got his second point and after a great run by Alan McLoughlin resulting in a free Liam Moran leveled the game.

On the 15th minute Liam Moran put Swinford ahead and withing minutes Liam found the back of the net. Great work betwen Kevin McDonagh, Michael Prendergast and Liam Moran sent Liam away to bury in the net. Swinford were well on top now and after  a kickout was won by Michael Walsh and played into Kevin McDonagh, another point was added. Liam Moran added another to put us 6 clear with 23 minutes gone.

The defence were well in control and pushing Achill back all the time but they were too be breached. Patient build up by the visitors saw the ball kicked across the box and fisted into the net to bring the deficit back to three.

Swinford rallied in the last five minutes of the half and Liam Moran added two points to leave matters at the break Swinford 1-9 Achill 1-4.

With the wind advantage in the second half Achill soon reduced the deficit only for Michael Prendergast to cancel it out.

Then in the space of five minutes Achill scored 1-3 to take the lead. It was a dominant period that showed they had not just come for the scenery of East Mayo. Kevin McDonagh equalised with over 15 mins left and the game was anybody.

A great save by Damien Geraghty kept the scores level before a soft free for Achill put them ahead once again. Michael Prendergast leveled once more with a fine point from out on the left.

With time running out Achill again took the lead  and on the 60th minute Michael Prendergast leveled the game for the 6th time. Despite a stonewall call for a free in injury time within kicking distance of the posts there was to be no more added to the scoreboard and the game finished Swinford 1-13 Achill 2-10.

Swinford played some great football and if they continue this form the wins will come and we can push away from the bottom of the table.

Swinford: Damien Geraghty, Alan McLoughlin, Sean Brady, Kevin Barry, James Lavin, Ryan Convey, Joshua Smith, Michael Walsh, Johnny Burke, James Sweeney, Kevin McShea, Liam Moran, Kevin McDonagh, Michael Prendergast, Tom Horkan. Subs Aiden McLoughlin, Conor Conway, Darren Campbell

Scorers: Liam Moran 1-5, Kevin McDonagh 0-4, Michael Prendergast 0-3, Michael Walsh 0-1.
