Senior League Div1C Swinford v Ballyhaunis

On a wet and windy evening at Robert McCallion Memorial Park Swinford met Ballyhaunis in a mid table clash with both teams looking for the two points to safeguard their status for another year.

Swinford started off the better team and got the opening two points from Kevin McShea and Darren Campbell. Ballyhaunis came back into the game and after a goal line clearance by Sean Brady their goalkeeper put over the resulting 45. After a few wides they leveled the gale at two apiece.

Darren Campbell put Swinford back in the lead but Ballyhaunis leveled from a free and so midway through the half it was all level. Liam Moran gave the lead back to Swinford with a great run but Ballyhaunis leveled for the third time.

James Devaney had a great chance for a goal but for a rasper of a shot to come back off the butt of the post. Ballyhaunis then got the next two points and for another goal line clearance by Sean Brady could have gone further ahead.

Points from Liam Moran and James Devaney before the break left the teams level at 0-6 apiece. Swinford enjoyed the wind in the  half and needed to be ahead at the interval.

Two points from Ballyhaunis gave them the upper hand early in the second half before great link up between Kevin McShea and Liam Moran saw Liam get one back. Ballyhaunis with two points extended the lead to three.

More fine work by Kevin McShea led to a goal for Kevin McDonagh and Swinford were right back in the game. This was the last action by Kevin McShea as he was replaced by Barry Brennan and Gerry Callaghan came on for Mark McNicholas.

Liam Moran put Swinford back into the lead with his fourth point of the game. Unfortunately Ballyhaunis got the next  three points of the game including two frees to put them in a two point lead entering the last five minutes. Gavin Moore pulled off a great save to keep Swinford in the game.

Liam Moran pulled one back with a free but again Ballyhaunis came and got the next two points for a three point lead. Swinford had one last chance which did not come off and the game finished 1-9 to 0-15.

It was a game that Swinford well could have got something out of but were also fortunate to lose by only three points. Two goal line clearances and a great save kept the game alive for Swinford, yet if they had got the goal in the first half a different score could well have been the outcome.

Swinford: Gavin Moore, Aidan McLoughlin, Sean Brady, Kevin Barry, Mark McNicholas, Mark Forkan, James Lavin, Joe Kelly, Kevin McShea, Johnny Burke, Kevin McDonagh, Liam Moran, Darren Campbell, James Sweeney, James Devaney. Subs Barry Brennan, Gerry Callaghan, Darrgh McIntyre.

Scorers: Liam Moran 0-5, James Devaney 1-1, Darren Campbell 0-2, Kevin McShea 0-1

There are two interesting games at the bottom of the table tomorrow with Tourmakeady home to Louisburgh and Cill Chomain home to Ardagh.

We still have two away games left against Louisburgh and Castlebar Mitchels.

    Minor B Championship

A very brave effort saw the Swinford ParkeKC team go down to a very late Ballyhaunis Gaels goal on a scoreline of Swinford ParkeKC 4-5 Ballyhaunis Gaels 3-10. The team came back from a six point half time deficit to lead going into injury time but to be denied. We were missing a lot of players and played a number of Under 16’s and came within 10 seconds of keeping our interest in the Championship alive. There is still one game left in the group stages of the Championship away to Bonniconlon.

    Senior League Division 1E

We left ourselves with too much work to do with a very poor opening 25 minutes. At that stage we were 9 down and should possibly have been more save for bad shooting by Garrymore. From there on in we more than matched our opponents and brought the deficit back to 5 at the break. In the second half we narrowed it to 3 but unfortunately could not close it any further. The final score was Swinford 0-10 Garrymore 0-13.

    Senior League Division 1C

In a gruelling game played with a very strong wind playing into the town end we enjoyed a very deserving win by 1-8 to Achill 1-5. Playing with the wind we went in at the break 1 point down but a very strong second half saw us take the crucial two points up for grabs. Full report at swinfordgaa.ie

    Under 15 Division 3A

The lads bounced back from their narrow defeat to Hollymount-Carramore last week to enjoy an emphatic win away to Ballyhaunis by 5-10 to 7-11. Well done to all the team and management..

  • Senior League Div 1C Swinford v Achill

Senior League Div 1C Swinford v Achill

It was a very windy early afternoon at Robert McCallion Memorial Park where Swinford and Achill met. A strong wind was blowing into the clubhouse end of the ground and Swinford played with it for the first half.

We started very well with a free from Kevin McDonagh with the first attack which he followed up with a fine second point from play. Great pressure by the Swinford half forward line and midfield led to a Liam Moran free slotted over the bar.

A lot of possession football led to no scores for Swinford and after 13 minutes Achill with an isolated attack knocked over a free and they soon followed up with a goal. All Swinford’s early work in the half with the breeze was now wiped out. Achill extended their lead with another free.

Swinford manager Sean Kavanagh made two changes to the  attack and James Sweeney and Kevin McShea came into the team. Kevin McDonagh got his third point and Kevin McShea then leveled the game. Just before the break Achill put over a very soft free right in front of the Swinford goal to lead by a point at the  break.

Now playing against the strong wind Swinford were up against it for the second half but that brought out the best in them and we were soon in the lead with a fine James Devaney goal. Both teams then missed a lot of opportunities with Swinford having four wides and Achill two.

Swinford went into a three point lead with another Kevin McDonagh free coming from great pressure on the Achill defence.

On the 19th minute Gavin Moore in the Swinford goals pulled off a great save to keep the 3 point lead in tact. Achill were in control of the ball now but could not get it in the scoreboard and rattled off another four wides.

Liam Moran then brought the best out of the Achill goalkeeper with a great run and shot pushed out for a 45. A Point from Kevin McShea extended our lead before a 50/50 challenge ended with a serious injury to a Achill player who was stretchered off. The game was held up for a number of minutes to deal with this. Steven McNicholas was also helped off to be replaced by Kevin Doyle.

Mark Forkan got on the scoresheet to bring our lead to 5 with a about 5 left on the clock. Achill got their first score of the half with a free and another point but could not get that goal they needed.

The full time whistle brought relief to the good few Swinford supporters, players and management and disappointment to the strong Achill support. Swinford winning by 1-8 to 1-5.

It was a vital two points and we have now leaped Achill in the league table. Three games left in the league…….

Against the wind Swinford played their best football and the team showed they are much better then the league position suggests. With the championship still to come the team are more then capable of beating Moy Davitts and putting a good run together.

Swinford: Gavin Moore, Steven McNicholas, Sean Brady, Alan McLoughlin, Mark McNicholas, Fergal Harte, James Lavin, Joe Kelly, Mark Forkan, Darragh McIntyre, Kevin McDonagh, Liam Moran, Johnny Burke, Barry Brennan, James Devaney. Subs: James Sweeney, Kevin McShea, Danny McNicholas, Kevin Doyle.

Scorers: Kevin McDonagh 0-4, James Devaney 1-0, Kevin McShea 0-2. Liam Moran, Mark Forkan 0-1
