Swinford v Charlestown Under 21B Championship

Some pictures tell a story but there was a lot to our destruction of our neighbours Charlestown this afternoon at a wet and windy Robert McCallion Memorial Park.

It was a game that we led from the first score but with a very strong wind in the first half and only leading by 1 at the break a lot was expected from Charlestown in the second half but mighty work from the entire team held the ‘town scoreless and we ran out easy winners by 8 and what could have been a lot more.

For the diehards in the club any win over Charlestown is worth celebrating but such a superb win in a semi final will be doubling celebrated tonight. Nothing won yet and we look forward to a final next weekend against either Hollymount/Carramore or Davitts.

The game started in windy but dry conditions and the pitch was looking well after all the early rain. Liam Moran got us off the mark with an early free and we soon gained a strong foothold in the game. Kevin McDonagh added the second after the ball was well won by Ryan Convey. A great goal chance fell to James Devaney but the crossbar stood in his way.

After some fine work by Johnny Burke and Liam Moran Kevin McDonagh added his second and our third point.

There was twelve minutes on the clock before Charlestown got off the mark, after two earlier wides. James Devaney had a long kick pushed over the bar by the Charlestown goalkeeper to keep the lead at 3. The visitors added their second before Liam Moran added another free and Mark Forkan got our sixth point.

With two minutes left in the half Charlestown scored a goal and what turned out to be their last score. Before the break they added three wides to their wide tally to lead us leading by the minimum of 0-6 to 1-2.

Swinford supporters were very nervous at the break with only a point lead and now with the wind to play against. However the rain came down and the wind died down for the second half. After an early wide for Charlestown James Devaney got the goal which put daylight between the two teams and Kevin McDonagh covering every blade of grass on the field added two more points to put us firmly in the driving seat. Our visitors continued extending their wide total.

Johnny Burke made a great run up the field and a good ball into Michael Walsh who kicked it over the bar to put 7 between us midway through the half. Sean Prendergast who was having an excellent game picked up an injury and was replaced by Conor Conway.

Two great goal chances then fell our way when first Michael Walsh and then Liam Moran had shots screaming across the box. Charlestown then had a great chance to get back into the game but for a fine save by Jonathan Giblin.

With chances to extend our lead we had a few bad wides and one off the upright before Liam Moran got the last score of the game to leave it 1-10 to 1-2 at the final whistle.

A great team effort by all concerned in tough conditions saw  us progress to the M D Roofing services Under 21 B Championship final.

Swinford: Jonathan Giblin, Alan McLoughlin, Steven McNicholas, Sean Prendergast, Sean Brady, James Lavin, Michael Walsh, Mark Forkan, James Devaney, Liam Moran, Kevin McDonagh, Ryan Convey, Johnny Burke. Sub: Conor Conway, Michael Prendergast, Caoimghin McLoughlin, Andrew Lenehan.

Scorers: Kevin McDonagh0-4, James Devaney 1-1, Liam Moran 0-3, Mark Forkan, Michael Walsh 0-1 each.
