On a wet and windy St. Patricks Day morning Swinford kept their unbeaten run in the 2017 Michael Walsh Intermediate League going with a good win against Balla.

Swinford played with the strong wind for the first half but it was Balla got off to a great start with a point in the first minute. Swinford then lost their full forward Gordon Carter in the second minute with hamstring trouble.

After 5 minutes Liam Moran got Swinford off the mark and this was quickly followed by a great goal from James Devaney.  Kevin McShea extended our lead with a fine 45. Then followed a lot of possession by the home team but no action on the scoreboard.

After 20 minutes Balla got their second point, soon followed by their third. Liam Moran soon settled Swinford with his second of the game but again some poor finishing meant the score at half time was Swinford 1-3 Balla 0-3.

Against a strong wind and only a three point lead things were not looking good for Swinford but this team plays better when in the weaker position.

A good start with a pointed free from Kevin McDonagh extended the Swinford lead. Then came the Balla backlash and they rattled off three points, including two frees to leave it a one point game with about 20 minutes left.

Swinford then settled and got to grasps with the Balla forwards and pushed well up on them. Great work by Jason McLoughlin out on the wing fed the ball to James Devaney who scored a fine point, which he soon added to with a second point. Midway through the half we led by the first half goal.

Liam Moran added two points, one from a free to put five between the teams and the game petered out. Balla got a consolation free near the end to finish the game Swinford 1-8 Balla 0-7.

In poor conditions and with the two young teams on display it was a good game and leaves Swinford on top of group 1 of the Michael Walsh Intermediate League with a game against Castlebar Mitchells left.

For a game that started very slowly there sure was a grand stand finish to round 2 of the Michael Walsh Intermediate League.

It took ten minutes and a few chances for both teams before The Neale took the lead. A Liam Moran free leveled the game before the visitors scored two from frees.

A fantastic goal from Liam Moran gave Swinford the lead for the only time in the game. The goal was a piece of individual brillance by Liam.

The Neale drew level and then retook the lead before Liam Moran leveled the game with a free. An error in the Swinford defence allowed The Neale in for a goal and they added another point before the break to leave it Swinford 1-2 The Neale 1-6.

Swinford started the second half with great urgency and rattled off three points. A punt in by Kevin McShea was fisted on by Darren Campbell and came back off the cross bar and put over by Jason McLoughlin. Jason soon added a second after a ball in from Mark McNicholas. Mark Forkan added the third to leave one between the teams.

This resurgence was soon ended as The Neale scored the next three points to go back four ahead. Kevin McShea pulled one back which was cancelled out by a Neale free midway through the half.

Swinford were not finished and points from Gordon Carter, Johnny Burke and Liam Moran (F) brought the game back to the bare minimum with just under ten minutes left. The Neale put two between the team and it looked like Swinford could not find their way back into the game.

Liam Moran got his fourth point from a free to set up a grand stand finish. On the mark of 30 minutes Gordon Carter leveled the game with a beauty from well out the field.

Shortly after John Finn blew the full time whistle and both teams will probably be happy with a point.

  • Michael Walsh Intermediate League R1 Belmullet v Swinford

Michael Walsh Intermediate League R1 Belmullet v Swinford

It was an overcast morning in Belmullet but Swinford left the happier team after a tough tight game.

Due to leaving the bag of jerseys at home in the kitchen Swinford togged out in the Belmullet Under 21 colours and got a dream start to the game when an early free from Liam Moran sailed into the Belmullet goal after two minutes. This was followed up by three points from James Devaney, Jason McLoughlin (F) and Michael Predergast to give the travelling team a great lead.

It took till the 14th minute for Belmullet to get off the mark and they settled into the game with two frees over the bar. Swinford did not let that unnerve them and they soon returned the difference to six with points from Jason McLoughlin (F) and Kevin McShea.

Swinford were not going to have it all their own way and in the last ten minutes of the first half Belmullet rattled off four points (3F) to leave it at Belmullet 0-6 Swinford 1-5.

Belmullet kept the scoring up with the opening point of the second half which was soon cancelled out by an excellent point from Darren Campbell. Within minutes the game was level with two home points (1F). This fight back from Belmullet did not unnerve Swinford and points from James Devaney and Jason McLoughlin had the difference at 2 points after 15 minutes.

Again two Belmullet points leveled the game (1F) and with eight minutes left the game was on a knife edge. Swinford finished much the stronger and points from James Devaney, a Liam Moran free fisted over by a defender and another point from James Devaney and a successful free from Liam Moran in injury time left the full time result at Belmullet 0-11 Swinford 1-12.

It was a very good start to the year for Swinford and especially satisfying how the game was finished after been on edge with ten minutes left. Belmullet were missing a few players but it has been many a year since Swinford won up in North West Mayo.

Next game in the Michael Walsh Intermediate League is next  Saturday at 4pm at Robert McCallion Memorial Park

Goint into the game both teams required points to consolidate their position in Division 1C. This was the home teams last game while Swinford have a trip to Louisburgh next weekend.

Swinford got off to a great start and were five points up after twelve minutes with scores from Kevin McDonagh, Liam Moran, JP Broderick and a couple more from Liam Moran. It was the 16th minute before Mitchells got on the scoreboard and they rattled off four more points to be level going in at the break. Swinford were to regret their large number of wides and should have been well in front at this point.

Soon after the break Kevin McDonagh put Swinford back in front but Mitchels got the next three points to lead by two after ten minutes. Points from Liam Moran and Kevin McDonagh leveled the game for the third time midway through the half.

That was the end of the scoring for Swinford as Mitchels scored three points without reply to win by 0-11 to 0-8.

It was very disappointing to see such a small squad of players present for such an important fixture.  The effects of a long drawn out season are showing on the team. The GAA are going to have to look at the effects the county championship is having on the small clubs. Weeks and weeks go by without any games and then when the weather has turned and players have college and exams on their minds there is a glut of games. At the height of the summer the team went eight weeks without a league game. If we are to keep our players in the game this has to change.

Swinford: Gavin Moore, Aidan McLoughlin, Sean Brady, Mark McNicholas, Mark Forkan, Paul McDonagh, Kevin Barry, Johnny Burke, Michael Walsh, Kevin Doyle, Kevin McShea, Kevin McDonagh, Liam Moran, JP Broderick, Darren Campbell. Subs James Lavin

    Scorers: Liam  Moran 0-4 (1f) Kevin McDonagh 0-3 (f), JP Broderick 0-1

  • Senior League Division 1E Swinford v Aghamore

Senior League Division 1E Swinford v Aghamore

As Swinford warned up before the match the sky opened and what a downpour that came down but thankfully save for some showers the rain wan not too heavy for the game.

Swinford won the toss and decided to play against the wind for the first half. Aghamore ran into a teo point lead but two successful frees from Kevin McDonagh leveled the game after ten minutes. A great run by Pearse Walsh who picked out Gerry Callaghan and bang the ball was in the back of the net, from there Swinford led the game. Darren Campbell quickly extended the lead with a converted free. Kevin McDonagh got his third of the game and his first from play when a quick free was played to him and over the ball went. After 20 minutes the score was 1-4 to 0-2.

Swinford were in complete control at this stage and well in position to win the game easily when Gerry Callaghan picked up a yellow and then black card and we were down to 14 men. Aghamore then rattled off three points before the break to give themselves a great chance.

Aghamore continued off again in the second half and there was only one between the teams. Kevin McDonagh steadied the team with a great point from out on the left and Barry Brennan moved into full forward and got a fine point. Kevin McDonagh put over another free to extend the lead to 4.

Aghamore tested our defence but it was very resolute and great in the tackling. A converted 45 and a free threw them a lifeline midway through the half but they did not get any more success on the scoreboard. Swinford pressured the Aghamore kickout and drew success when James Sweeney caught a short kickout and Darren Campbell got the resulting point.

James constant pressure and nonstop running ended with him picking a nasty looking head injury but even on his way off the field he was giving directions to the players.

Another point by Kevin McDonagh concluded the game with Swinford winning by 1-9 to 0-8.

It was a very good end to the league campaigh and we finished on 18 points. Still waiting for other results to see if this is enough to go up……..

Swinford: Damien Geraghty, Aiden McLoughlin, John Gerard Kelly, Peter Quinn, Kevin Barry, Steven Walsh, Barry Brennan, Gerry Callaghan, Cillian O’Donnell, Kevin McShea, Kevin McDonagh, Pearse Walsh, Darren Campbell, James Sweeney. Subs Paul McNicholas, Mark McNicholas
