  • Senior League Division 1E Ballina v Swinford

Senior League Division 1E Ballina v Swinford

On a beautiful early afternoon in Knockmore Swinford took on the unbeaten Ballina Stephenites in a top of the table clash in Division 1E.

The game was delayed as we waited for the referee to arrive by half an hour but this did not unsettle either team who provided great entertainment for the few fans who travelled.

As the writer has stated here on many occasions the club is the back bone of the GAA and deserves as much if not more support then the county team.

Ballina started off the stronger team and got the first two points of the game before Pearse Walsh got Swinford off the mark. That did not halt Ballina who rattled off the next three points to give them a four point lead after 13 minutes.

Pearse Walsh got his second of the game before Ballina rules it out with their sixth point. For thenext ten minutes Swinford took over the game starting with a fine goal from Kevin McShea assisted by a great knock done by JP Broderick. The two men then kicked individual frees to put Swinford in the lead, which was extended by a great point by substitute Jason McLoughlin.

The half time whistle came at the wrong time as Swinford pushed to extend the lead but after a very poor first 20 minutes it was a well earned break on a score of Ballina 0-6 Swinford 1-5.

Swinford started the second half as they ended the first with an initial wide before some great defensive work by Jason McLoughlin led to a turnover and Kevin McShea put over a point from out on the right. The lead should have been further extended but for two wides.

It was the 11th minute before Ballina scored their opening point of the half, with a free, well over twenty minutes since their last score. They soon narrowed the gap with an another point from a free before Kevin McDonagh got a point with a volley over the bar. Another free by Ballina brought it back to a one point game before a fine move up the field ended with a point by JP Broderick.

Ballina got the next two scores and the game was level with just over ten minutes left. Darren Campbell kicked a free to put Swinford back ahead before two points for Ballina put them one ahead with the game entering injury time.

This Swinford team has shown time after time this season that they play to the full time whistle. A high ball was kicked into the melting pot and Kevin McShea used all of his height advantage to punch the ball into the corner of the goal, giving the Ballina keeper no chance.

There was still time for one more Ballina attack which was snuffed out by the old head of Paul McDonagh at full back.

The final whistle saw a scoreline of Ballina 0-13 Swinford 2-9

It was a deserved win in front of about a dozen supporters by a team that is playing very well together. Well done to one and all and to the management team of Billy McNicholas, Tommy Feeney and Michael Lenehan.

With two games left we are joint top of the table with Garrymore with Ballina two points behind with a game in hand. Everything to be played for in the upcoming games against Aghamore and Garrymore.

Swinford: Damien Geraghty, Aiden McLoughlin, Paul McDonagh, John Gerard Kelly, Mark McNicholas, Kevin Barry, Joshua Smith, Gerry Callaghan, Pearse Walsh, Kevin McDonagh, James Sweeney, James Lavin, JP Broderick, Kevin McShea, Darren Campbell. Subs Jason McLoughlin. Unused Sub Gavin Moore

Scorers: Kevin McShea 2-2, Pearse Walsh, JP Broderick 0-2, Jason McLoughlin, Kevin McDonagh, Darren Campbell 0-1

  • Junior Championship Swinford v Kilfian

    Junior Championship Swinford v Kilfian

    Swinford_GAA_Crest

This Swinford Junior team just don’t give up and once again they played to the last minute of todays entralling relegation playoff with Kilfian played in Knockmore.

Playe in good conditions in front of a very poor attendance both teams played with great spirit in a very tight affair. Kilfian defeated Swinford in last years group stage of the championship but Swinford with a lot of players missing were not going to down without a fight.

Both team started nervously with some wides before Kilfian went in to a two point lead. james Sweeney opened the scoring with a punched point from a dropping Adrian Forkan free. Kilfian extended their lead before Gearoid Brady got his first point for Swinford.

Kilfian enlarged their lead to three points after 20 minutes with two more scores before three points from Adrian Forkan in the space of five minutes leveled the game. A bit of slack defending and missed opportunities let Kilfian score 1-1 before half time to give them a four point lead at the break.

Adrian Forkan maintained his free taking to peg one back just after the restart save for Kilfian to keep the gap at four with a free. We will give the next point to jason McLoughlin following a few deflections to keep us in the game.

Kilfian then tok control of the game and all looked doomed for Swinford with three unanswered points to leave six between us midway through the half.

Once again Adrian Forkan took control and scored four unanswered points. Has to be said Kilfian kicked a lot of wides in this period under great pressure from the Swinford defence. In addition we lost Fergal Loftus to a very harsh black card. If the black card is to stay  in the GAA referees have to be consistent, there was a much better usage of the card in the first half when Paul McDonagh was dragged to the ground. Well thats an argument for another day……

Into the last ten minutes with only two between the days Damien Geraghty pulled off a great save to keep the game alive. Kilfian though got another point to leave that first half last minute goal between the teams. We had some great opportunites to narrow the gap but for some poor wides.

This Swinford team showed in the Canon Henry final a few weeks that they don’t know how to give up and well into injury time the ball was played into a packed goal area for James Sweeney who started the scoring for Swinford to bang the ball into the back of the net.

From the resulting kick out the full time whistle came and a bit of confusion rained as the Knockmore score board had Swinford winning by a point but the score was level and both teams deserve another go at each other. Full time Swinford 1-11 Kilfian 1-11

Swinford: Damien Geraghty, Aiden McLoughlin, Paul McDonagh, Jonathan Moore, Fergal Loftus, Mark McNicholas, Joshua Smith, Sean Predergast, James Sweeney, Jason McLoughlin, Michael Predergast, Gavin Moore, Adrian Forkan, JP Broderick, Gearoid Brady.

Scorers: Adrian Forkan 0-8, James Sweeney 1-1, Gearoid Brady, Jason McLoughlin 0-1 each

  • East Mayo Junior Championship Swinford v Eastern Gaels

East Mayo Junior Championship Swinford v Eastern Gaels

We got off to a great start with a JP Broderick goal straight from the throw in which should have urged us to push on but Eastern Gaels came right back and within ten minutes the game was level.

Eastern Gaels proceeded to go into a three point lead as we approached half time. We then found our game and three points from Danny McNicholas, Adrian Forkan and JP Broderick had the game level at the break.

The visitors got the first point of the second half to go back into the lead. Some great defensive work by the Swinford forwards led to the ball been overturned and played into JP Broderick and no better man to have in front of goals as he grabbed his second goal of the game.

From there on in it was all Swinford and the game should have been put out of sight of Eastern Gaels but for some poor finishing. Adrian Forkan extended our lead from a free before we had a catalogue of wides before two more points from Adrian Forkan, one from play and the second from a free pushed our lead to 5.

Eastern Gaels pulled one back before points from JP Broderick and Adrian Forkan saw out the game on a finish of Swinford 2-8 Eastern Gaels 0-8.

We now go on to play Bohola Moy Davitts to see who proceeds out of the group.

Swinford: Gavin Moore, Aiden McLoughlin, Paul McDonagh, John Gerard Kelly, Mark McNicholas, Kevin Barry, Sean Prendergast, Michael Walsh, Steven Walsh, Cillian O’Donnell, Danny McNicholas, Michael Prendergast, Adrian Forkan, JP Broderick, Anthony Friel. Subs: Gearoid Brady, Andy Lenehan, James Sweeney

Scorers: JP Broderick 2-3, Adrian Forkan 0-4, Danny McNicholas 0-1
