Senior League Div 4 Westport v Swinford match report

It was a lovely midday in Westport as we contested our second league game of the season.

    Minutes silence

We got off to a good start with early points from James Devaney and Mark Forkan. Westport pulled one point back before Liam Moran got our third from a free. The kick out was won by Mark Forkan who fed James Devaney for his second of the game. Michael Prendergast added a fifth and after ten minutes we led by 0-2 to 0-5.

Westport got the next two scores to bring it back to 2 before Liam Moran kicked a fine point from play. The next ten minutes Westport took control and added three points to level the game with two minutes left in the half. Darren Campbell kicked two points before the interval to give is a two point lead 0-6 to 0-8.

Both teams started off the second half with wides before Michael Walsh and Michael Prendergast doubled our lead. Westport pulled one back before we took control of the game.

Two frees each from the boots of Liam Moran and Jason McLoughlin had us leading by double scores with seven minutes left. Complete dominance around the field had put us in that position.

The game was put beyond doubt by two scores from Darren Campbell, first he found the net and soon followed up with his third point. James Devaney added his third of the game before Westport added a point with the last kick of the game.

It finished a comprehensive win for Swinford by 0-8 to 1-16. The good start to the season has continued and we go into a home game against Ballina next weekend and an away trip to Tourmakeady the evening of the 12th May.

The work rate in the second half was exceptional, no westport player was allowed time to settle on the ball and this pressure resulted in huge turnovers. Our forwards then caused all sorts of trouble leading to frees and socres.

I know the official match report is Westport 0-9 Swinford 1-16 but I must have missed a Westport score……

Swinford: Aaron Kinsella, Alan McLoughlin, Sean Brady, James Lavin, Conor Conway, Mark Forkan, Joshua Smith, Michael Walsh, Johnny Burke, Darren Campbell, Michael Prendergast, Liam Moran, Jason McLoughlin, James Sweeney, James Devaney. Subs Aiden McLoughlin

Swinford defeated Ballaghaderreen tonight (Sat) in round 3 of the Centenary Cup to put them top of the group with Ballaghaderreen and Kiltimagh.

In a very good performance Swinford started the game well with a free from Liam Moran after the referee spotted foul play close to goal. Liam followed this up with a point from play before Ballaghaderreen got their opening score with a goal after ten minutes.

Swinford struck back with two frees from Liam Moran which put them in a lead that they never gave up. A wonderful ball from Michael Walsh cut the defence open to Darren Campbell who buried in the net to put Swinford ahead by 4. Ballagahderreen came back with three points and they will be kicking themselves with a number of wides.

Before the break Jason McLoughlin scored two points to put Swinford head by three as we thought. The referee corrected teh score to put it Swinford 1-6 Ballaghaderreen 1-4.

Five minutes into the second half Jason Mcloughlin shot low and hard into the net, followed up by a Liam Moran free put Swinford ahead by 6. Ballaghaderreen pulled one back before Swinford lost Michael Walsh to injury.

Another point from Jason McLoughlin kept it at 6 midway through the half. Ballaghaderren scored a point from play and then two free from frees to leave a goal between the teams entering the last two minutes.

On the 60th minute Liam Moran got a great point from play to give Swinford a bit of comfort as Ballaghaderreen came down the field and hit the back of the net.

Swinford held out in injury time to record a one point win and their 4th win in a row, taking in Centenary Cup, League and Championship. Winning is a great feeling.

Swinford: Aaron Kinsella, Sean Prendergast, Sean Brady, Alan McLoughlin, Conor Conway, Mark Forkan, James Lavin, Michael Walsh, Kevin Doyle, Fergal Harte, Michael Prendergast, Liam Moran, Jason McLoughlin, Tom Horkan, Darren Campbell. Subs James Sweeney, Aiden McLoughlin, James McNicholas

  • Intermediate Championship Islandeady v Swinford

    Swinford_GAA_Crest

In June 2017 these two sides met in round 2 of the championship with Isleadeady winning out easy winners by 3-16 to 0-13.

Ten months later it was a different story as Swinford travelled to Islandeady for the first round of Egan Jewellers Intermediate Championship. Given very little chance by the local papers with one scribe suggesting that we should not be in the Championship Swinford upset all the odds.

After three minutes of play all the doubters were smiling as Isleadeady got off to a great  start with two points and a goal. Swinford then awoke and took the game straight at Isleadeady with a point from James Devaney and a great individual goal from Johnny Burke. Further points from Liam Moran, Michael Walsh, Conor Conway and Liam Moran had Swinford leading by 3 with ten minutes on the clock. It was a lead that they were never going to relinguish.

Both teams shared points with Swinford from Liam Moran, added to by a free from Jason McLoughlin. Both goalkeepers earned their places with the home keeper saving well from James Devaney and Aaron Kinsella making a great save at the other end. Swinford lost their full back Sean Brady to a black card after 20 minutes to be replaced by Sean Prendergast.

Islandeady pulled one back but a number of wides did not assist their cause. Just before the break Jason McLoughlin got his second point of the game with a fine kick from play. At half time Swinford led by 4 points.

It was at this stage last June that the home team took control of the game but this was a different Swinford side. Isleadeady got the opening score that was cancelledout by James Devaney. The next point from Isleadeady could have proved very controversial as the umpire signalled a wide ball, only to be overruled by the linesman and a point awarded.

Both teams shared a number of wides with Swinford kicking a lot of ball short into the goalkeeper hands. Islandeady landed a free and there was two between the teams. Then on the 47th minute the crucial score of the game came Swinford’s way. Their plan of pressing the Islandeady kickouts bore fruit as a poor kick came straight to Jack McDonnell who with a bit of work to do buried it in the net. That was to be Swinford last score of the game as Islandeady threw everything at them. They rattled off four points to leave it a one point game with time up on the clock. 4 and a half minutes of injury time were played with a free to the home team with the last kick of the game, that went of to the right and wide.

Emotional scenes from all the Swinford players, management and supporters as they celebrated their well derserved win.

In the other game in group 2 saw Burrishoole defeat Bonniconlon 2-12 to 0-10.

Swinford: Aaron Kinsella, Alan McLoughlin, Sean Brady, James Lavin, Conor Conway, Mark Forkan, Joshua Smith, Michael Walsh, Johnny Burke, Darren Campbell, Michael Predergast, Liam  Moran, Jason McLoughlin, Jack McDonnell, James Devaney Subs Sean Prendergast, Tom Horkan, James Sweeney, James McNicholas

Scorers: Johnny Burke, Jack McDonnell 1-0, Liam Moran 0-3, James Deveany, Jason McLoughlin 0-2, Michael Walsh, Conor Conway 0-1
